A/B testing

A/B testing is a marketing technique that involves evaluating different variables of an ad and changing just one parameter to determine the most effective version.

API

API is the acronym for Application Programming Interface, a set of functions allowing applications to communicate with each other. It is commonly used in softwares such as operating systems, database management systems, programming languages, or application servers that include a programming interface.

B2B

B2B, or Business to Business, is the set of commercial practices or strategies of a company targeting another company as a client. For example, a manufacturer whose target client is a production plant would be involved in B2B transactions.

B2C

B2C, or Business to Consumer, is the set of commercial practices or strategies of a company targeting regular households as customers. For example, Walmart offers everyday consumer products for all. It is therefore a B2C business.

Backlink

A backlink is a redirect link on a particular site or web page. The quality and quantity of backlinks helps to qualify the page’s reputation and increase its position on search engines like Google.

Big data

Big data is mainly based on three criteria: volume, speed and variety. This fundamental concept in digital marketing makes it possible—among other things—to analyze data by collecting information about each visit to your website. Big data is therefore all the data collected in a database used to make future decisions. This concept is mainly useful for product development, predictive maintenance, customer experience and fraud, as well as fostering innovation.

Blog

Blog writing used to be a way for individuals to express their opinion or tell certain stories. Nowadays, it’s a tool for publishing regular and relevant information intended for people interested in a given subject. These pages or websites are especially used to help understand and clarify certain topics. Blogs often take the form of journalistic-style articles or information pages.

Bounce rate

The bounce rate is a quantitative indicator that measures the number of Internet users who came to your web page and left the site immediately. These Internet users therefore consulted only one page of the website.

C2C

C2C, or Consumer to Consumer, is the set of commercial practices or strategies of an individual aimed at another individual. These practices are most common in applications or websites like eBay or Kijiji.

Call-to-action

A call-to-action, or CTA, is a marketing term used to describe the prompting of action in individuals. It refers to any images or software designed to elicit an immediate response from the person in question.

CMS

A Content Management System (CMS) refers to a set of software available to everyone to manage and create web content. Using a CMS requires minimal coding knowledge.

Content marketing

Content marketing is a marketing practice that consists mainly of creating media content of all kinds in order to increase the visibility of a brand, its activities on the web, and the traffic to its site.

Conversion

Conversion refers to the conversion rate. This rate measures the ratio between the total number of individuals reached by a campaign versus the number of individuals having actually carried out the action sought as part of the marketing campaign’s framework.

Conversion rate

The conversion rate measures the number of individuals reached by a marketing campaign and the number of individuals who actually responded through action.

CPC

The acronym CPC is commonly used to refer to cost per click. The CPC is therefore the amount paid for each person who clicked on a redirect link advertised on the Internet.

CPT/CPM

The Cost Per Thousand (CPT), also known as Cost Per Mille (CPM) refers to the price of advertising space on a website in function of the total number of visitors. The Cost Per Thousand can therefore vary depending on site traffic as well as the relevance of the targeted visitors.

CRM

CRM, or Customer Relationship Management, represents all the processes and activities aimed at maintaining and improving the customer relationship as well as building loyalty and maximizing the revenue per customer.

CSS

The acronym CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. The CSS language is mainly used as a language of style and aesthetics. It serves as a visual interpretation of an HTML code. CSS therefore formats the content described by HTML.

CTR

CTR is the acronym for Click Through Rate. CTR is used to measure the impact of an advertising campaign by mainly analyzing the number of total clicks of an ad as well as the number of page views.

Database

A database is a memory bank for storing and retrieving all the raw data that has been collected. Databases are primarily used to store a large amount of information that will be utilized in the future. For example, all of the names of students in a school are kept in a database.

Ebook

An eBook is a book intended to be read on a computer, tablet or smartphone. eBooks are particularly useful for sharing information while reducing printing costs.

Email

Email is a technology used to transfer information between two individuals. Compared to traditional mail, email is a tool that can transmit messages or images instantly and securely.

Email marketing

Email marketing is a marketing strategy based on sending emails in order to generate sales, increase traffic on your website, or provide information about your promotions.

Error 404

Error 404 is an HTTP protocol error code that indicates that no redirect page or link was found for the requested entry.

Exit pop-up

Mainly used in online stores, exit pop-ups are windows that appear when a person wants to leave the web page in order to keep their focus longer.

Facebook Ads

Facebook Ads is a commercial section of Facebook. Facebook Ads can appear in the News Feed, on the right side of the desktop, or on Instagram.

Facebook Audience Insights

Facebook Audience Insights is a tool provided by Facebook to help manage and understand the number of interactions a page has with your customers. This tool can also provide valuable information to enhance the understanding of your page’s performance.  It can also help you analyse the traffic on your site, and the relevance of said traffic.

Facebook Business Manager

Facebook Business Manager is the subsidiary of the Facebook group that administers the commercial and sponsored advertisements seen on Facebook. Ads powered by Facebook Business Manager are marked with the “sponsored” label. Facebook Business Manager allows you to target the people who will see your ad, either by focusing on certain fields of interest or a specific location.

Geotargeting

Geotargeting is a targeting technique based on a person’s geographic location. This technique mainly aims to identify specific areas in order to offer advertisements or messages directly related to the targeted individuals. Messages are therefore more appropriate to the audience reached and can generate spectacular results.

Google Ads

Google Ads is part of Google’s advertising network. This section of the Alphabet Group mainly offers a paid advertising service aimed at targeting consumers’ purchasing phases, thus offering them products in line with their needs. These advertisements are mostly anchored in the first page of the Google search engine, often within the first three or four results.

Google AdSense

Google AdSense is part of Google’s advertising network. Using websites or YouTube videos as a medium for its ads, Google AdSense offers the publication of private ads on different media platforms in order to target where consumers are at in their buyer journey and offer them products accordingly.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free tool offered by Google that allows its users to analyze various technical aspects of their website, such as traffic. Through the quantitative data extracted, Google Analytics examines the interaction levels of any given person on your site, the weekly visits of an individual, the number of page views, as well as the time spent on a page.

Google My Business

Google My Business is an Internet service operated by Google for business owners. This platform from the Alphabet Group allows you to control search results related to your business name. It is especially useful when people search for your name or businesses like yours on Google and Google Maps.

Google Search Console

Google Search Console is a free service offered by the Alphabet Group to help you monitor and maintain your site’s presence in Google search results. Google Search Console is also used to solve any problem directly related to your website’s Search Engine Optimization.

Growth Driven Design

Growth driven design is similar to the Agile method. This approach decreases delay times before launching by focusing on what really matters. It is therefore an evolving method that prioritizes the implementation of the most important aspects in order to promote company growth.

Hashtag

A hashtag is a word or phrase that is preceded by a (#). Hashtags are mainly used on social media and certain websites like Twitter and Instagram to group together hashtags within the same subject.

Heatmap

A heatmap is a digital representation of the most navigated areas on your website. The heatmap analyzes the pages where visitors spend the most time, the most popular redirect links or the images with the best Click Through Rate (CTR). You thus get a graphic representation of all your hotspots in order to better understand and analyze the popular areas and those that might need some tweaking.

HR marketing

HR marketing is a technique applied in human resources that mainly targets talent management and brand image.

HTML

HTML is a markup language used to create web pages and is used, among other things, to define hypertext links. This language is especially used in the creation of websites.

HTTP & HTTPS

HTTP or HTTPS is a transmission protocol that allows users to access web pages through a browser. All of the digital pages available on a conventional browser like Google or Bing come with an HTTP transmission protocol. HTTPS is simply a transmission protocol with superior security.

HubSpot

HubSpot is an American digital marketing company located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It develops a range of software adapted to Internet marketing. It was created in 2006 by Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah.

HubSpot Flywheel

Flywheel is a marketing concept that refers to the management and increase of a company’s potential customers; it’s an approach that emphasizes both the acquisition of new prospects and the retention of current customers. The model is essentially based on the reduction of friction points between you and your current clients, using the momentum of happy customers to drive referrals and find new ones.

Hyperlink

A hyperlink is usually a word, phrase or image with a redirect link. It’s a text that redirects to another page with a single click.

Inbound marketing

Inbound marketing is a marketing strategy aimed at bringing the customer to you rather than you having to directly solicit the customer, as in traditional marketing strategies.

Inbound recruiting

Similar to inbound marketing, inbound recruiting is a marketing strategy that aims to bring job seekers and passive candidates directly to you. It is mainly used for people in the job search phase.

Infographics

Infographics is the field of creating and processing digital images using specialized software. Infographics are mainly used in web design, digital arts and digital editing.

Instagram

Instagram is a social media platform, app and website founded and launched in October 2010 by American Kevin Systrom and Brazilian Michel Mike Krieger. It specializes in the publication of photos and videos.

JavaScript

JavaScript is a scripting language primarily used in interactive web pages and servers.

JSON

JavaScript Object Notation, or JSON is a textual data format derived from JavaScript. Notably, it allows the transmission of data between a server and a web application. JSON is an alternative to the XLM format.

Key performance indicator (KPI)

A key performance indicator (KPI) is an indicator that mainly measures the following:

  • assessment;
  • diagnostic;
  • communications;
  • information;
  • motivation;
  • continued improvement.

Key performance indicators therefore serve as a decision-making aid. They eliminate subjectivity and prioritize quantifiable data.

Keyword

A keyword is a word or phrase used to search for information on a specific subject. Keywords are therefore used to provide relevant information related to the search. For example, the phrase “black tea” would be a good keyword for a page providing information about tea. Usually, people write specific terms when conducting an online search.

Landing page

A landing page is a website redirect page used in the marketing field. Following a specific action by an individual on a website, email or app, the landing page serves to confirm or reinforce the intentions of the customer regarding the initial offer.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a professional oriented social network created in 2003 in Mountain View, California. This specialized social network has more than 400 million members grouped into more than 170 sectors of activity.

Marketing audit

A marketing audit is a consulting practice which aims to obtain the external view of a marketing expert for advice on the best choices to make for your company; the best practices in the industry; and the pitfalls to avoid. A marketing audit is therefore a review or analysis of the company in terms of its different technical aspects with a view to improving its current conditions.

MQL

The term MQL is an acronym commonly used in marketing which stands for marketing qualified lead. The term MQL refers to a lead which has a much higher chance of becoming a client than other leads. Leads that are transformed into an MQL therefore show a greater interest in your product.

Off-page SEO

Compared to the On-page SEO, the Off-page SEO refers to the improvement of redirect links coming from outside the website (external) in order to improve its positioning on search engines.

On-page SEO

Also called On-site SEO, the On-page SEO consists of improving written and visual elements of a website so that it ranks better on search engines like Google.

Optimization

Optimization refers to SEO (Search Engine Optimization), which mainly consists of improving the web pages in their positioning in the various search engines so that they appear on the first page.

Persona

The term persona refers to a typical profile of individuals who meet certain criteria defined by the company. More specifically, the creation of personas serves to better understand consumers and to define a guideline according to profiles. The concept of persona is widely used in marketing to better identify individuals potentially interested in buying a product.

Pinterest

Pinterest is a social network specialized in photo sharing. It allows users to create and publish content, or to pin and save certain photos to their profile and create albums visible to all.

PPC

Pay Per Click (PPC) refers to the amount paid by an advertiser to redirect a visitor to its content offer.

Prospect (Lead)

Simply put, a prospect or lead is someone who has shown some interest in your product or service, whether by clicking on your links, entering their email address, or else.

Responsive design

Responsive design, or an adaptive website, is a digital creation practice that aims to build websites that adapt to different screen sizes. This practice is particularly useful with the rise of smartphone and tablet users.

Return on investment (ROI)

ROI refers to the return on investment generated by marketing campaigns. The concept of ROI calculates the amount invested in marketing and the benefits in order to calculate the rate of return.

The general formula for calculating return on investment is: return on investment (%) = (gain of investment – cost of investment) / cost of investment.

SAAS

SAAS, or software as a service, is a cloud-based distribution model. The applications are hosted by a provider and accessible through an Internet connection.

SEO

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is a positioning strategy that makes your site or web page appear in the first natural results of search engines.

Sitemap

sitemap is a graphic representation of a website’s architecture. A sitemap is particularly useful when it comes to redesigning or optimizing a website. Generally, a sitemap lists website elements in hierarchical order to show the site’s structure and redirect links.

SQL

SQL is commonly used in marketing to refer to a sale qualified lead, meaning a person who has transformed their interest in your product into a potential sale. This individual will therefore turn into a prospect and can be approached by the sales team to make a sale.

SXO

SXO stands for Search eXperience Optimization. It brings together a set of strategies aimed at optimizing the user experience, from the initial search to conversion. The idea is to make the user experience as simple and pleasant as possible.

Thank you page

A thank you page is a website redirect page used in marketing to confirm an action such as making an appointment or downloading content. The thank you page is also used for conversion tracking purposes.

Unique visitor

A unique visitor, or unique user, is an Internet user who visits one or more pages of a website during a period of time. Thus, the number of unique visitors represents the number of different visitors who have visited at least one page.

URL

The URL is the address of a site or hypertext page on the Internet.

User interface

The user interface (UI) comprises all the graphic and visual elements of a software. The main purpose of a UI is to create a simple, easy and pleasant visual interface for the users.

User experience (UX)

The user experience (UX) refers to the user-friendliness of a software or interface.

WordPress

WordPress is a free content creation platform specializing in the creation of websites and blogs. Written in PHP, this platform is distributed by the American company Automattic.

YouTube

YouTube is a digital online platform specializing in videos. This platform allows anyone to post videos and share them for the platform users to view.
